Swine Influenza is also known as Pig Flu, Hog Flu, Influenza A and N1H1 according to the World Health Organization (WHO). As of November 08, 2009, statistics from "FluCount.Org" shows a total of 7,529 swine flu-related deaths and 601,376 cases worldwide.
Some of the noted outbreaks of swine flu happened on 1918, 1976, 1988 and 1998. The latest is the 2009 swine influenza, which had circulated as a predominant flu virus worldwide.
There are fears that swine flu will become a major global pandemic, therefore many countries are planning major vaccination campaigns against the said influenza.
The direct transmission of a swine flu virus from pigs to humans refers to "Zoonotic Swine Flu". However, the 2009 H1N1 virus is not a zoonotic swine flu as it is transmitted from person to person.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fatalities are most common for children, elderly and those who have health problems and weak immune system.
H1N1 virus are similar to influenza-like illness and some of its symptoms include coughing, fever, fatigue, sore throat, headache, chilling, body ache, diarrhea and vomiting.
The spread of this 2009 Swine Flu between humans is through coughing, sneezing and touching the nose or mouth after contacting to things with virus. On the other hand, the H1N1 virus cannot be transmitted through food such as pork products.
It is vital to frequently wash the hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub solution, especially after being out in public. As much as possible avoid going to public places and keep away from other people. Using face masks such as N-95 and N-99 can filter some viruses, but not totally all. Vaccination is also important to be protected against the so called pig flu.
The swine flu in human is most contagious during the first five days of the illness. Therefore, the need for urgent medical attention is very important for people who feel the symptoms or had been exposed to those infected with the flu.

Thanks for your comments! Obviously you have done your homework and that in itself is rather refreshing on this subject. Fears ranging from that of the level of the movie "Outbreak" to myths likening to that of the absurd as to when I heard girls could get pregnant from swimming in the same pool as teen boys, I enjoyed the simple straight foreward scoop. If you are not in health care, you put me at ease as one who is.
thanks for posting this. My brother's brother in law just got over the swine flu.. and I think i might have it.. but hopefully not.. now I can see what the symptoms are.. and I think I should get tested thank you again!

First of all, zoonotic - I learned a new word today.
Back in Hong Kong, where I'm from, I couldn't believe how unlucky we were. We seemed to be the breeding ground of all sorts of germs that led to SARS, Avian Flu, Dengue Fever, Swine Flu... It's horrible.
I just looked at the Swine Flu Count website. The statistic for the Cook Islands is astonishing.
Michael.
Do you hate it too?
